Adam
Kingston expects to inherit his father’s multinational conglomerate. When he
finds out half of it went to Nate Thomas—an annoying man whose dreams for
Kingston Corp.’s future clash with Adam’s need to stave off financial
disaster—Adam is furious. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to wrest control
of Kingston Corp. from Nate.
Nate may be soft-spoken, but he refuses to be
swayed by Adam’s arrogant demands. When Nate accidentally drops a pair of his
lacy panties in front of Adam, there’s no mistaking Adam’s interest. Nate
hadn’t realized Adam was bisexual, but now that his secret is out, Nate is
willing to use Adam’s lust against him if it means protecting the welfare of
the company he loves.
For Adam and Nate, hatred and desire are closely
linked. Their inability to compromise threatens the company and could expose
their tightly held secrets. But as they work together to develop a plan to save
Kingston Corp., they begin to realize there might be more to their relationship
than anger and lust.

Review
When I started to read this long novella, I have to admit I had a hard time caring what happened to the main character. I wasn’t overly concerned about Nate, the love interest, either. Here we have two privileged white guys, fighting about who gets to control a corporation, and I’ve spent way too much time around these types of guys to find them sexy.
(So why did you buy the book, Jaye? Because yes, this is one I bought, not one I got as a review copy. I bought the book for the lace. You have your thing, I have mine. Anyway.)
Reading further didn’t improve the characters for me, especially Adam. The book is told from Adam’s point of view (first person,) so we don’t get very deep into Nate’s head. What we do get is a lot of Adam behaving badly. Adam suffers from anxiety, which he deals with by acting like an ass. His anxiety is filtered through toxic masculinity, which doesn’t exactly do wonders for his personality.
Honestly, if I had to be around this guy, I’d drown him, and I’m not sure why the people in his life haven’t yet.
Here’s the thing. I also suffer from anxiety. It does make me kind of unpleasant to be around. I do not have the luxury of a ton of money and a company owned by my father, where he can let me run a whole department to keep me employed and useful. If Adam didn’t have his own money, he’d be scraping for money too, and it honestly pisses me off that he’s not. I can’t understand what Nate sees in him to make him want to stay – and because we’re seeing all of this from Adam’s point of view, we never do find out.
You’d think this shared experience would make me more sympathetic to Adam, but no.
Anyway, while I really loathed Adam I found I didn’t want to put the book down. I genuinely wanted to see what would happen next. Would Adam have a come-to-Jesus moment and realize he needed help? Would his driver throw him into Lake Michigan?
And that’s the mark of an absolutely fantastic author – someone who can take a character you absolutely loathe and make you want to see what happens next anyway.
Not just out of spite, either.
The sex scenes are hot. This came in exceptionally useful for me, as my furnace is busted and getting it fixed is taking a while. Nate’s bedroom persona is not what I expected for a CEO, and not what I usually see in a character who gets caught at the office in pink lace panties. The sexual scenes also played perfectly into the plot and character arc, which is vital and was done seamlessly.
I recommend this book, more highly than my martini rating would suggest. I couldn’t get into Adam as a person, but the way Violet made me care about what happened next anyway truly floored me.
