Detective Cashel ‘Cash’ Godfrey is big,
tattooed and angry so people typically keep their distance. He’s fresh out of
the police academy, however, no one is looking to partner with the six foot
four beast with a huge chip on his shoulder and an inability to trust. When
Cash scans the orientation room he wasn’t expecting to find sexy hazel eyes
locked onto him. Eyes of the handsome Detective Leonidis ‘Leo’ Day.
Leo is charming, witty, hilariously sarcastic
and the only one that can make Cash smile. He’s proud, out and one bad-ass
detective.
Together Cash and Leo become the most revered
and successful narcotics detectives Atlanta’s ever seen. Able to communicate
and understand each other, without even having to voice it, they quickly climb
up the promotional ranks.
When Cash saves Leo’s life in a raid that turns
deadly, Leo begins to see something in the big man that no one else
does…something special. But Leo fears he’ll never break through the
impenetrable wall that protects Cash’s heart.
Nothing Special takes the reader through various
emotions throughout the richly fulfilling plot that’s full of erotic gay
romance, heartache, passion, trials and tribulations, police action scenes, and
an intriguing twist that comes to an amazing ending that’s impossible to see
coming.

Review
This isn’t a recent release, although I believe it has been revised with additional text since I got my copy. I was feeling a little down the other day, so I disappeared into the tub with a couple of martinis and a big stack of my favorite paperback books. Of course, A.E. Via’s Nothing Special series was at the top of that list.
Unfortunately for me, it’s been so long since I read my paperbacks that I forgot this one was signed.
I didn’t drop it into the tub, but the humidity and the paper cover did not love each other. The signature, however, is still intact. I’ve put the book at the bottom of a pile of very heavy things and I’m hoping for the best.
Anyway, if you like troubled guys, steamy sex scenes, passionate declarations and the occasional spate of violence this is the book (and series) for you. I happen to like all of the above, so you can see why this is one of my more comforting books.
We have our two main characters, who are both vice cops. In fact, they’re partners. Work partners, although they’d like something more. (It’s romance, this is not really a spoiler.) Leo in particular would like something more with Cash, but there are obstacles. Mixing work and play is usually a bad idea, it’s against Department policy, and the two above facts making it hard to show the other they’re interested the biggest issues here.
They are also in a distinctly macho field. It’s been a minute or two since I spent much time around cops, but my recollections are not of areas where delicacy or sensitivity are exactly valued. One character in particular shows an exceptionally homophobic bent.
Cash and Leo find each other comparatively early in the book, but there are complications. Cash has secrets, because what fun is a romance novel without a big, burly, broody guy with secrets? Leo, through absolutely no fault of his own, lands on a tripwire in Cash’s past and things go kind of pear shaped for a while.
See? Fun! Now add guns, drug runners, and the SWAT team. Isn’t this what you call self-care?
