Review

It took me a minute or two to get into this one, possibly because it was the fourth in a series I hadn’t read. Never mind that – once I got into the book, I found myself thoroughly absorbed.

Nemesis is told from alternating points of view – Syl’s, and Roue’s. I don’t think the book would have succeeded in any other format. Syl, despite her position, is still incredibly human. Roue is not. It’s vital to have both points of view or it would be easy to dismiss one half of the pair as not being committed.

And believe me, from either point of view, it can look as though the other isn’t committed to their relationship. Neither one really seems to doubt the other, but if I were in either of their shoes I probably would.

Fantasy and other branches of speculative fiction are incredible vehicles to explore issues of critical importance in the real world – issues like manipulation and consent. I don’t want to give anything away here, but we do see that the partners are being manipulated. And we have to grapple with that manipulation, just as we have to grapple with the consequences of that manipulation.

While the character being manipulated wasn’t the one I preferred, it physically hurt to see her manipulated. She knew she was being controlled and had no way of saving herself. It was miserable to see and caused pain in my chest.

Nemesis does a fantastic job of exploring consequences, being afraid and doing the right thing anyway, responsibility, and love. It also happens to be a non-stop adventure with two kick-ass heroines. Given that there’s no overt sexual content, I’d even pick up a copy for my daughter. (She finds the concept of kissing exceptionally repulsive.)
