I was scrolling through a Facebook book rec group a couple of weeks ago, and someone asked a question about a certain trope. Several people highly recommended this book in particular, and because I was all alone, exhausted, and in A Mood™ I decided I’d give it a try.

As it turns out, this was one of my better life decisions.

This is not a long read. At first, I found myself grinding my teeth. The situation in which Tad finds himself is cringey. (This is likely the origin of the warning above. Heed the warning.)

Tad – who could have been any random guy stumbling through Allston at any time over the past twenty years, even if he’s a little old to be wandering into frat parties – gets into it. And from there on in, he’s good to go. Knight’s prose is vivid and it’s easy to follow Tad’s thought processes here. His enjoyment, however reluctantly entered into, is real and thorough. There’s no Big Gay Panic, which always pisses me off.

This is the first part of a series of stories, and I’m looking forward to the rest of them. I’m grateful to the many people who recommended Loser Takes All and I’m happy to share it with you now.
