Dashing. Jacked. Bad tempered. My new boss, everybody.
Now what’s the cure for smitten?
Pinch
me. I can’t believe I’m working under him.
Dr. Gray Caldwell. Hottest, swooniest, stormiest bachelor ever.
Insanely tall. Unfair perfection. Intimidating abs and X-ray glares.
Doc puts the animal back in veterinarian.
My
dream job should be all puppies and kittens.
Turns out, my new boss hates three things:
1. Small town drama. Baby, we’ve got tons.
2. Pets in distress – and he’s their hero every time.
3. Anybody poking around his past. Like me. Oh,
crud.
But
how could I resist the best mystery in Heart’s Edge?
I wish I had. Unraveling Gray is a dangerous game.
One wrong move could end our little town.
Plus this gorgeous, complicated grump plays for keeps.
I
barely recognize the man he becomes vowing to protect me.
A beastly shield who sets every rule on fire.
Then one stolen, five alarm kiss sends my whole world spinning.
Hello, trouble. Farewell, sanity.
What if it’s not the good doctor who claims me – but the badone?
From Wall Street Journal bestselling author Nicole Snow – two hearts on the line and a whole town’s fate. A badass vet slays his demons, saves pets, and makes the firefly he swore he’d never chase his. Full length romance novel with a Happily Ever After worth the purrs and wagging tails.
Review
Let’s start with everything I liked about this book, and there was plenty to enjoy. I loved the setting, specifically the animal clinic. I loved that the heroine was a vet tech. I’ve known so many amazing vet techs over the years and it was fantastic to see one as the heroine here. I loved all of the pets, and I loved seeing Baxter get a happy ending.
I loved the overall plot, the suspense part of the plot. It’s like Snow crafted it with me in mind. Creepy corporations with shady government ties? Why not just dangle a martini in front of me? There was even murder! I was bouncing for joy. (This is probably not the proper reaction to murder, but hey.)
There were a few things that left me a little cold when it came to this book, though. For one thing, there’s no indication that the hero is an actual vet. He was an army medic, then *something,* and now he’s running a veterinary clinic? He seems to do the job adequately, but it kind of bothered me.
I wonder if it would have bothered me less if he was less of a jerk. The title of the book is No Good Doctor, and while everyone in town seems to adore this guy he’s basically just a jerk. He’s moody, standoffish, and snobbish. We get his point of view and of course he’s tortured by guilt, etc., but he’s still an ass.
Which brings me to my third issue. As a suspense novel, I enjoyed this book immensely. As a romance, it left me cold. I did not want these two characters to end up together. I kind of wanted them to stay far away from each other – not because of Doc’s Great Big Manly Guilt but because he’s an ass. I couldn’t understand why Ember was so attracted to him – or anyone else, for that matter. Sure, he was supposed to be physically attractive. He also had the personality of slime mold.
The heroine, Ember, didn’t stand out too much. She was shy and clumsy. I’m not in any position to cast stones about being shy (or clumsy, I guess). Her clumsy aspect was supposed to be endearing, and it cleverly disappeared whenever she had to deal with an animal. She was a virgin, and her mother thoroughly shamed her for it, but she went from shy virgin to vixen in a snap. Sex positivity is great, but it seemed a little sudden.
I loved the suspense, and if that’s your thing I can’t recommend No Good Doctor highly enough. If you’re more here for the romance, you’re going to have to figure out what kind of romance you’re looking for.
