Best
friends since grade school, high-powered Chicago attorney, Sean Flaherty, and
small-town mayor Megan Mackenzie have always shared a special bond. When Sean
is shot by a client’s angry ex, Megan rushes to his side, terrified she’s about
to lose her long-time confidant.
Upon his return to River’s Edge to recuperate,
Sean discovers that his feelings for his pal have taken an undeniable turn for
the romantic. While Megan struggles with an unfamiliar longing for Sean, she
worries that he may be mistaking a safe place to land for love.
Can Sean help her realize that they are truly
meant to be so much more than friends?
Review
I know I did a blitz for this a few days ago, but I also got a review copy and OH MY GOD this is so good. I’m not sure I’ve ever given 5 martinis for a m/f book before. If I did, I take them all back because this book was just *everything.*
Okay, there were a couple of things to complain about. For one thing, the hero admits when he was wrong, which makes him completely unrealistic and unattainable. Secondly, babies exist in this book, but they’re unobtrusive. I’m really searching for things to complain about. Work with me here.
I read it on the train to New York, on my way to RWA2019. I didn’t have great hopes, because it had none of the elements that usually keep me glued to the page and I’ve been in this huge reading drought lately. Literally nothing has kept my attention but really crappy fanfiction. (Lest you think that’s a clue about where my head’s at, I complain about that too. I just do it where people can’t see.)
Anyway, this book was like sunshine after a week of rain. The main characters were both likeable (nay, loveable). Megan even has a cat. A cat! If you like small-town romance, this is your book. If you like a high-powered heroine running around managing things and taking charge, Megan’s your lady – she’s the mayor of said small town. If you like a take charge heroic alpha, you’ll adore Sean. He’s all that without the asshole side so many of those characters can develop.
The side characters never fail to delight, either. This book is literally sunshine and happiness, rainbows and unicorns and lollipops all around. If I had to sit there and think of a great exemplar of romance to hand someone who already had bad ideas about the genre (say me ten years ago), this would be the book to do it. It’s lollipops and candy canes, but it’s never saccharine.
There are moments I want to share with you, because they’re beautiful and important. They illustrate who these characters are and why I even managed to get through Times Square with a smile on my face (which never happens.) At the same time, those would all be spoilers. Just pick up the book from any of the above links. You will absolutely not be sorry.
Also, there is wine. It’s hard to go wrong with wine.
