Excerpt

He shut the door on his way out and Blythe collapsed onto the bed, heaving a bone-weary sigh. She would have thought about her exhaustion, but was too numb. That was the danger in unwinding, she knew. Giving in, even slightly, meant giving in totally. There was no way to do it halfway.

It was strange being back in the world full of eyes, she realized. She remembered to think about that as she undressed and stepped into the spacious shower. How quickly she’d gotten used to not being watched, and now to move back into that space. Unsettling. It chilled her despite the hot jets of water coursing over her. She wanted to cover her chest with her arms, not because she was ashamed of her body, but because she had no choice in who saw it. It was something she’d never gotten used to. Her body was hers. It belonged to her, to no one else. And it should have been her right to determine who was allowed to see it.
