Blurb:
After running from a past destined to kill him,
Snow has been hiding on the streets.
Tell nobody your name.
Tell nobody your secrets.
Trust nobody!
These are the rules of the streets.
His entire life changes when he saves an
eight-year-old boy from a violent end. Christopher Manos is one of the most powerful
crime bosses in the country.
Don’t ask anyone to do something you aren’t
willing to do yourself.
Secrets can get you killed.
Trust nobody!
These are the rules he lives by.
When his eight-year-old nephew disappears, he
never expects the boy’s savior to end up being his own. A man with a dangerous
past and a man with a dangerous future find love amidst murder and mayhem. But
with Snow’s life being threatened at every turn, will Christopher’s best be
enough to prevent Snow Falling?
Review:
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the blurb.
Honestly, I’m not kidding. I’ve had this book in my TBR list for a while, before I knew the author, and every time I’d come to read it I’d go through the blurb and think, “No. Too melodramatic.” Then I got to know the author a little bit personally and I was afraid to read it and review it in case I didn’t like it. (Anxiety is funny like that.)
The book had plenty of drama. Oh, there was tons of drama. None of it, and I do mean none, was melodrama. Everyone’s reactions were reasonable, even if the situations sometimes seemed a little weird. If I can suspend my disbelief long enough to believe in werewolves and long-dead warlocks stalking descendants of their killers through time, I can suspend my disbelief long enough to believe in the scenario that brought Snow into contact with Christopher.
By now, you’re more than aware of my strong preference for stories with murder and mayhem. Snow Falling brings that in a big way, but all the violence is necessary for the plot. There’s no point where I can say, “King hit a wall here and threw in a murder to start things up again.” (Ahem. Not that I’ve ever done that.) Everything makes perfect sense and flows logically, and I did not want to put the book down.
(So I didn’t.)
The two main characters are incredibly vivid. They’d have to be, in the wild ride that is Snow Falling. Snow, the title character, has been through absolute hell for a very long time. He still shines brightly in his interactions with all of the secondary characters, especially Christopher’s nephew. He’s not the strongman type of character I’d almost expect in this type of story, but his strength radiates from the page and I still wouldn’t cross him.
Christopher is a crime boss, and in some ways he’s what one would expect of a crime boss. It would be impossible to ignore his heart, which shows through even in the most brutal acts.
The secondary characters are amazing, standing out from each other with distinct personalities and motivations. The ultimate villain might be a little over the top, but it’s hard not to want that in a story like this.
You’re going to love this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, and the one after that.
