Review
I’ve been subscribing to Donovan’s newsletter for a while now, and I find both her posts and her advice to be pretty useful. I have another book by her, a book of lists for writers, that I use often as a reference when I’m plotting. So when I got the note in my in box letting me know this one was available for preorder, I knew I was going to pick it up. There was never any doubt.
I also knew it would be useful.
This won’t “cure” your writer’s block, because writer’s block isn’t what we think of it as. Writer’s block isn’t a lack of inspiration. It’s external factors – like lack of sleep or overwhelming outside needs – interfering with us putting our pens to paper. Sure, there are times when I sit down to write and I find myself staring at a blank page, but those times always happen when I’ve just been through another bout of insomnia, or some shipper from my old fandom decided to crap all over everything again.[1]
This book won’t help with those things. It certainly isn’t going to help with my insomnia. What it will do is help to organize my thoughts and narrow down some of the things I might want to do.
For example, let’s pretend I’m going about my daily business, cleaning the bathroom or something, and I get a fantastic idea for a character. She’s charming, she’s a total bad-ass, and she can cook, too. What 5,000 Writing Prompts will do is help me to figure out what to do with that character so she doesn’t languish somewhere in the back recesses of my mind for the next twenty years.
Kind of awesome, right?
Not all of these prompts are going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The great thing about them is that they’re written in such a way it’s easy to take them and make them yours if you’re so inclined. Donovan also includes writing exercises for bloggers as well as prompts for poets, so even those who don’t write fiction will find something to satisfy them with this book.
I’d recommend this for anyone who writes. It’s a great tool
to have in your arsenal.
[1] But I’m not bitter.
